Behind the Smiles

Behind the Smiles

At Darrin Zoller Photography, I believe family portraits should feel like quality time—not a chore. With a little planning and the right mindset, your summer session can be relaxed, fun, and genuinely memorable. Here are five easy ways to make it happen:

1. Dress for Comfort First
Think light, breathable fabrics—linen, cotton, and soft knits are perfect for staying cool during a golden hour session. Coordinate your family’s look with complementary colors, like soft blues, creams, or earthy tones, which photograph beautifully in summer light. Skip stiff collars or anything too fussy—kids (and grown-ups) do best when they can move and feel good in their clothes.
Example: A light chambray shirt, khaki shorts, and sandals for dad, a breezy midi dress for mom, and neutral rompers or cotton tees for the kids make a great combo.

2. Plan Ahead (But Not Too Much)
Choose your outfits and lay everything out the night before—including shoes and accessories—so the day-of feels smooth. Let your kids know ahead of time that you're doing something fun together, like “We're having a little picnic and taking some pictures before sunset!” Keeping the vibe light helps everyone show up in a better mood.
Bonus tip: Bring backup clothes for little ones—grass stains and popsicle mishaps happen, and that’s okay.

3. Bring Snacks and Breaks
Nothing derails a photo session faster than a hangry toddler (or parent). Pack small, non-messy snacks like crackers, apple slices, or mini granola bars—something easy to offer mid-session if needed. Water is a must, especially during warm Virginia evenings.
I build in plenty of breathing room, so it’s totally normal to pause for a snack or let the kids run around between shots. Those candid moments are often the best.

4. Don’t Stress About Smiles
You don’t need to practice poses or remind anyone to say “cheese.” I’ll guide you through the whole session with gentle prompts, games, and simple direction to keep things natural. If your toddler wants to pick flowers or your teen wants to hang back for a minute—that’s all part of the story.
Some of my clients’ favorite photos come from the unexpected moments: a spontaneous dance, a quiet hug, or a big belly laugh that no one planned.

5. Trust the Process
You’ve done the prep—now you get to enjoy it. My job is to make your family feel comfortable and to find the in-between magic. Whether we’re at a local park, in a wildflower field, or on a blanket in the backyard, I’ll keep things moving at a relaxed pace with plenty of room for fun and connection.
Remember: This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about capturing real moments with the people you love.

Let’s make this summer one to remember.
